STATEMENT OF DUTIES


Basic Duties

TThe Elementary Student Support & Well-Being Counselor supports students’ social, emotional, and academic growth. The counselor teaches social-emotional skills, provides short-term counseling, supports positive behavior, guides students and families through transitions, and works closely with teachers and parents. This role follows the ISCA and ASCA frameworks and helps ensure a safe, caring, and inclusive school environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Behavior Support and Incident Response

- Serve as a primary point of support for students and teachers when social-emotional or behavioral concerns arise.

- Use restorative conversations and problem-solving approaches to help students reflect, repair relationships, and learn from mistakes.

- Document incidents, interventions, via school platforms and follow-up actions, and communicate appropriately with staff and parents..

- Collaborate with the Principal to monitor behavior trends and contribute to a positive, proactive school climate.

- Support behavior intervention plans and MTSS processes; does not assign disciplinary consequences.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

- Provide resources, tips, and support to help teachers build strong SEL practices and implement the Second Step curriculum or other aligned classroom approaches.

- Lead/Contribute to class meetings such as Morning Meetings or Closing Circles to build community.

- Provide small-group lessons on topics like friendship, emotions, transitions, and problemsolving.

- Support students and families with international school transitions, including arrivals, departures, and re-entry.

- Lead Child Protection Month activities and lead/co-teach child protection lessons.

- Co-teach Grade 4 and 5 health development lessons.

Responsive Counseling Services

- Collaborate with parents, teachers, school leaders, and outside professionals to support student needs.

- Partner and Foster relationships with external support services and guide families to the right resources.

Individual Student Support

- Review, contribute to, and support the implementation of behavior and social-emotional intervention plans.

- Collaborate with learning support, EAL, and classroom teachers to ensure inclusive access to counseling services.

- Use student data (incident logs, SEL observations, attendance patterns, and referrals) to plan interventions and monitor progress.

Academic Development & Transitions

- Support students’ academic engagement and learning behaviors, including organization, goal-setting, and self-advocacy.

- Collaborate with teachers to identify social-emotional factors that may impact learning.

- Guide and coordinate structured transitions, including readiness for the shift from Elementary to Middle School.

- Provide input on student needs related to placement decisions and transitions across grade levels.

School-Wide Support and Professional Contributions

- Follow ASCA and ISCA ethical and professional guidelines.

- Participate as a member of the Child Study Team (CST) and MTSS structures.

- Contribute professional input during admissions reviews, particularly regarding student well-being and support needs.

- Offer workshops and training to teachers and parents on SEL topics, child protection, and positive behavior strategies.

- Support student leadership and voice initiatives (e.g., Assembly Crew, student leadership roles).

- Communicate clearly and professionally with parents and staff, using email, meetings, and digital tools as needed.

- Keep counseling notes and student information confidential and organized.

- Serve as the Elementary School Child Protection Lead, ensuring safeguarding policies, procedures, and reporting requirements are followed with fidelity.

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED


- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field.

- Valid certification as a School Counselor.

- Experience working as an elementary school counselor (international school experience preferred).

- Training or experience with SEL programs (e.g., Second Step, Habits of Mind, Cultures of Dignity) and restorative practices, with the ability to design and deliver preventative programming as well as responsive interventions, and to use data to identify trends, inform decisions, and evaluate impact.

- Demonstrated knowledge of child protection practices and ethical guidelines.

- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

- Experience working with students and families from diverse cultural backgrounds.

SKILLS & ABILITIES


- Strong understanding of social-emotional learning and child development.

- Ability to build warm, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families.

- Skilled in restorative conversations and problem-solving with children.

- Able to explain ideas clearly and work well with different people.

- Comfortable using data to identify trends, support informed decisions, and evaluate impact.

- Respectful of cultural differences and able to work in a diverse, international community.

- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.

- Able to maintain confidential records and use school digital systems appropriately.

- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

- Ability to design and deliver preventative programming as well as responsive interventions.

Supervisory Relationship & Controls

This position reports to the Elementary School Principal, and/or his/her designee. This position doesn’t supervise any RAS staff members.
